The ore docks in Marquette and Escanaba, Michigan, and in Ashland, Wisconsin were vital links in the iron orework. Each of the port cities eventually had several ore docks usually associated with the individual railroads serving the mines.
Michigan iron ore is found as isolated masses in a Huronian rock called iron formation. Iron formation is a banded sedimentarymonly composed of layers of silica the mineral of sand and glass, alternating with layers of iron minerals. However, the Empire Mine officially ceased production on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 and was placed in an indefinite idle state. Cliffs Natural Resources ships Tilden ore by a wholly owned short line railroad, the Lake Superior and Ishpeming, to Marquette for transport by lake freighter to steel mills in the lower Great Lakes.

Minnesota produces more than 50 percent of all iron ore mined in the United States and Michigan's total is about 20 percent. Most of the ore is produced from underground mines, some of which are more than 3,000 feet in depth. Open pit mines are at Palmer, Marquette County, and Wakefield, Gogebic County.
